[Katniss is coming into Milliways from between the first and second books; spoilers below!]



Life is cheap in the country of Panem, and the Games - two teenagers from each of twelve districts pitted against each other to the death in a contest broadcast around the country - are a symptom, the government's way of reminding the people that they are weak and helpless. Katniss Everdeen (and her district partner) won their Games through an act of rebellion. Now, even though her victory has brought her family more money than they could ever hope to spend, their lives are about to get harder than they have ever been before.

Katniss is a sixteen-year-old girl who hasn't been a child since her father's death when she was eleven. Her mother fell into a deep depression, and the burden of keeping the family from starving to death, a fate not uncommon in District Twelve for those who can't work, landed on Katniss's shoulders. Her father had taught her to hunt, and to identify edible and medicinal plants, and with these abilities Katniss kept herself, her mother, and her beloved little sister alive.

Katniss's life has left her unable to trust easily, and the Games only worsened her tendencies toward suspicion and paranoia. She's impulsive, especially when she gets angry, and she doesn't smile much. But if she has reason to put herself through hell for someone else, she will do it.
